About the University
Introduction
Utopia University (Chinese: 大同大学; Esperanto: La Utopia Universitato, LUU) traces its origins to Utopia College, founded in Shanghai in 1912 by Hu Dunfu and his colleagues of the Lida She society. Taking its Chinese name Datong — the "Great Harmony" of the Book of Rites — as its ideal, the institution grew into a renowned private university with faculties of arts, science, engineering and commerce, distinguished above all in mathematics and physics. In 1952, during the national reorganization of higher education, the university ceased operation; its faculties were merged into Fudan University, Jiao Tong University, Tongji University and other institutions, while its affiliated middle school continues to this day.
On 20 August 2026, the preparatory conference for the re-establishment of Utopia University was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, marking the official commencement of preparatory work. The re-established university will operate trilingually — in Chinese, English and Esperanto — teach primarily online as an "air-based campus", maintain its operating base in Bishkek, and use the historic Shanghai campus as its mailing address.
